I'm doing a Regional HR Director role but always seem to be on a plane. How can I still do a high level HR role but avoid the constant travel?
Answer:
Believe it or not, it is definitely possible to find Regional HR Director roles that don't involve too much travel. Look for roles that have solid HR teams in place out at the country levels. Also check out where your key business stakeholders are - if they are at the same base location as you, this could also reduce the amount of travel. What is the Global HR Director and the Regional Business Head's view towards travel? If it is a ‘trigger happy' approach where people always jump on planes, then take this as a cautionary signal. If you notice that video conferencing and telephone calls are a way of operating in the company, this is generally a good sign. Also, check the flexibility to be responsible for your own travel. Perhaps you can lump your business trips together. Perhaps you can have your regional and in-country HR teams fly in to meet you, or arrange to conduct HR meetings on the side of other business meetings around the region.
