I'm seeing more regional roles out of Asia Pacific Japan also covering the Middle East. Is this broader regional coverage becoming more common?
Answer:
Continued global reorganisation of HR functions aims to reduce the complexity of reporting lines, and to reduce the number of direct reports at a global level. A number of organisations, particularly in the Oil & Gas and Fast Moving Consumer Goods sectors, have centralised their Asia Pacific and Middle East HR headquarters as one unit. This has generally been in Singapore, Dubai or Hong Kong. We don't as yet see this as a general trend, but its an interesting one to follow. Combining the regions would result in sizeable regional HR roles covering around 20 countries, which offer terrific career development opportunities for HR practitioners with extensive Asia Pacific Japan experience. But at present, most US-headquartered companies at least still combine the Middle East with Europe and Africa into what is known as the EMEA region.
