- GUEST EXPERT - Leanne Ansell-McBride: How have you seen the Organisational Development specialisation in HR develop as a key driver in business success in Australia over the last decade?
- Answer:

Leanne Ansell-McBride
Chief Executive Officer
Victorian Leadership Development Centre
Based in Melbourne
I've been in the HR and OD space for 20 years in Australia, Asia and the UK, and have really enjoyed the transition the HR function has made over this time from an 'administrative overhead' to a strategic business partner delivering on the organisation's agenda. In Australia, with a rapidly declining and ageing population and, until recently, a very tight labour market, employee attraction, retention, engagement and performance have been key to business success. With the onset of the global financial crisis, there's a great temptation for organisations to take their eye off the 'employee ball'.
But our role as a driver of business success is, I believe, even more critical in this climate. Through strategic workforce planning we help the business to understand the long term implications of short term employment decisions and identify the future talent challenges before the business faces them. We assist the business to navigate through the current economic challenges by redefining and building the skills needed to deliver in a rapidly changing environment, and designing organisational structures around new organisational imperatives. The greatest risk in the current environment, is the impact on employee morale and engagement, and our strategies to ensure high engagement and ultimately high performance in today's tough times are absolutely critical to business success.
