I am a non-banking HR professional and want to break into the banking sector. What's the most straightforward way to do this?
Answer:
It is well known that when hiring HR talent, the Banking sector prefers to source HR practitioners currently sitting within competitor banks. Front line stakeholders expect HR to value-add quickly to their business, and this requires previous knowledge of the financial services product base. If you are keen on the Banking sector, but don't have the experience, we suggest entering an area of the bank where business knowledge is not as critical, e.g. in the Technology and Operations function, the Support functions, or even Consumer Banking. Keep in mind though, to stand a chance it would be to your advantage to choose the area within the bank that best leverages your past experiences. So, for example, if you have previously worked in HR for a Consumer-driven organisation, you may be taken seriously for a Consumer Banking HR job.
