How do HR jobs pay in Australia relative to Asia?
Answer:
Recent exchange rate fluctuations with the Australian dollar and other world currencies have made it increasingly difficult to make salary comparisons between Australia and Asia. In general, however, HR salaries for junior and mid-level HR positions ‘down under’ tend to pay less than similar roles in Singapore and Hong Kong. This is because the supply of HR talent at these levels in Australia is high, and many of the roles are state or country-focused, meaning a narrower geographical coverage when compared to some of the regional roles often seen in Asia. At the top end of the tree, pay scales for HR Head roles in Australia – especially those with large Australian companies – will sometimes exceed those found in Asia. This is particularly the case if the role covers a significant employee base both domestically and also internationally. But again when dealing with geographical breadth, regional HR Head roles out of Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai or even Japan or China will still generally be paid higher than domestic or regional HR Head roles covering an equivalent employee headcount. And this is especially the case when tax savings are factored in for Singapore, Hong Kong or Dubai.
