Industrial & Manufacturing

The Industrial and Manufacturing sector covers a diverse grouping of businesses such as oil/gas, semiconductors, logistics, automotive, construction and chemicals.

The Industrial sector can arguably be the most rewarding environment for an HR practitioner to grow their HR career. A key reason for this is that HR deals with personnel in both factory and corporate locations, so there is a broad diversity of people to work with. The business also deals in tangible products rather than difficult to define services, so it tends to be easier for the HR function to grasp the business imperatives and to add value fast.

As supply chains become increasingly internationalised, so the opportunities for regional or global HR work in the industrial sector remain high. While the most senior opportunities in this area are in decline in service centres such as Singapore and Hong Kong, they are still strong in the manufacturing powerhouses of China and India, with a second tier of countries not far behind. As most companies in this sector are unionised, HR Generalist work in the field can include a large element of Industrial Relations.
