Retail & Luxury

With Japan as an obvious exception, the retail industry has long viewed the region as a location from which to source supplies rather than as a market for its goods. All this has changed in recent years, with multinationals viewing the region as a new centre of global growth, with China and India leading the way. As such, we are seeing an increase in HR roles in the industry around the region.

HR in the retail industry has a large focus on the retention of staff. Like its customers, employees in the sector are attracted to the company by its brand, and if the image of a company brand slips momentarily this can have a direct effect on employee engagement. The fact that floor staff and customer service operatives are generally younger can also contribute to the problem.

As with the Hospitality & Leisure sector, recent growth in the retail and luxury sector in the region has forced HR to quickly become more sophisticated in the areas of Compensation & Benefits, Recruitment and Talent Development strategies.
