Definition
Learning & Development (L&D) is the generic title given to the discipline of improving the performance, skills or knowledge of employees within an organisation. At its most strategic, the role involves the design of curriculums that are tailor-made to the needs of an individual’s personal development as well as the company’s overall goals. At its most operational, it can involve the stand-up delivery of training programmes and the management of external trainers and vendors. In smaller organisations the training specialist is expected to cover all these facets of the role, but in larger organisations the design and delivery can be split into different teams. Other specialisations within training include E-Learning (web-based learning), technical training, sales training, and management (or ‘soft skills’) training.
Suitability Factors
Most training professionals start off their careers in the stand-up delivery of training programmes, and true L&D experts never forget the satisfaction of leading a group of eager learners. Trainers need to have a lot of energy as well as integrity, as a large part of this role involves the ability to engage the interest of a crowd. Senior L&D professionals tend to spend less time in the front line and more time using their experience to create learning programmes that consistently achieve their designed targets. While many L&D specialists stay in the field for their careers, it is also common to see them move into Organisational Development or Generalist HR roles.
